What do you think of 100% online NP programs?
Do you think it is possible for them to give a quality education like the brick and mortar schools? I understand that most of it depends on the specific school. Do you believe that employers will pass on an applicant that went to an online NP school vs. one who went to a brick and mortar school? – Anonymous
This is a great question. I personally attended the traditional brick and mortar school with some online classes mixed in, so I have a unique perspective.
To answer your question, I don’t think the quality of your education is affected by the 100% online coursework. The quality of your education is shared equally between the program and the student. It’s the program’s responsibility to offer the highest level of academic information that meets the needs of the aspiring nurse practitioner (NP) to practice safely and competently. And it’s the student’s responsibility to prove their competence and skill to prepare for their entrance into their new role.
Having a program completely based online will simply create a different set of challenges, but at the end of the day, a properly credentialed program can provide that education by whatever medium they choose (online vs traditional classroom). As for employers passing on applicants who have their degree from a completely online academic program? I’ve heard of no such thing, but that’s not to say it doesn’t or won’t happen.
I liken this argument to the notion that employers show favoritism to their alma mater or to certain schools when interviewing and hiring new employees. I think it’s the student’s responsibility to stack the deck and set themselves up for success no matter where they gain their entry level education.
